Emergency Water Heater Repair Cost

Updated October 2026 · 3 published sources listed at the end

Emergency water heater repair, before surcharges
$225–$975
Low $225High $975

Short answer: An emergency water heater repair typically costs $225 to $975, according to Angi, but after-hours calls add more. Emergency plumbers charge 1.5 to 3 times the standard rate, and many add a $150 to $300 trip fee. Nights are often billed at time and a half, weekends at about double and holidays up to triple.

A water heater that floods a utility room or leaves the house without hot water often cannot wait until Monday. Angi lists an emergency water heater repair at $225 to $975, and that range does not include the after-hours premium most plumbers charge.

How emergency pricing works

Angi reports that emergency plumbers charge 1.5 to 3 times the standard rate of $40 to $200 per hour:

When you call Typical hourly rate (Angi)
Weekday evening $60 – $300
Weekend $80 – $400
Holiday $120 – $600

On top of the hourly rate, many plumbers add a flat emergency or trip fee of $150 to $300. HomeGuide reports that 24-hour plumbers charge $195 to $260 per hour for late-night calls.

What the repair itself costs

The part being replaced matters more than the hour. Angi's standard (non-emergency) prices include about $150 for a thermocouple, about $350 for a gas control valve and $200 to $300 for an electric heating element. The full price list is in water heater repair cost.

If the tank itself is leaking, there is nothing to repair: the unit has to be replaced, which Angi puts at $850 to $1,800 at normal rates.

When it is a real emergency

  • Water is pooling under the tank or leaking from the tank body.
  • You smell gas near a gas water heater. Leave the house and call your gas utility first.
  • The relief valve is discharging hot water continuously.

No hot water with no leak is usually not an emergency. Booking the next business-day slot avoids the after-hours premium.

What to do while you wait

  1. Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top of the heater.
  2. For a gas unit, turn the gas control knob to off or pilot. For an electric unit, switch off its breaker.
  3. Move belongings away from the leak and contain the water.

Keeping the bill down

  • Ask for the trip fee and hourly rate before the plumber drives out.
  • Ask whether a temporary fix can hold until regular hours, then schedule the full repair or replacement at standard rates.
  • If replacement is likely, ask for a written quote that lists unit, labor, permit and haul-away separately.

Common water heater emergencies

  • Water leaking from the tank. If the tank itself is leaking, it needs replacing; there is no lasting repair.
  • Water leaking from a fitting or valve. Supply connections and drain valves can often be tightened or replaced the same day.
  • Relief valve discharging. The temperature and pressure relief valve is a safety device. If it keeps opening, the tank may be overheating or the house pressure may be too high, and both need diagnosing.
  • No hot water. On gas units this is often an igniter, thermocouple or gas valve; on electric units, an element or thermostat.
  • Gas smell. Leave the house and call the gas utility first.

What makes an emergency visit cost more

The repair parts are the same as on a scheduled call, but after-hours labor rates, dispatch fees and higher minimums apply. If the tank is old and leaking, an emergency visit can become a replacement, and installing a new heater at night or on a weekend usually costs more than doing it on a weekday.

Safety steps while you wait

  1. Turn off the power at the breaker for an electric heater, or set a gas control to off.
  2. Close the cold water inlet valve at the top of the tank.
  3. If the tank is leaking, connect a hose to the drain valve and drain it to a floor drain or outside.

Repair or replace?

When the tank is near the end of its typical life and something major fails, many plumbers recommend replacement rather than paying an emergency rate for a repair that buys only a short time. If the tank is young and the problem is a part, repair is usually the better value.

In Texas

Texas water heaters often sit in attics and garages. An attic tank that fails can flood a ceiling quickly, so an emergency call is more urgent there. Hard water in parts of the state also speeds up sediment buildup, which shortens tank life.

What the technician checks first

On an emergency call, the first job is to make the heater safe. For a leak, that means shutting off the water and power or gas and finding where the water is coming from. A drip from the relief valve, a supply fitting or the drain valve can often be fixed on the spot. Water coming from the tank body or seeping from under the jacket means the tank itself has failed and only replacement will fix it.

For no hot water, the technician checks the simplest causes first. On a gas heater, that is the pilot, the thermocouple or flame sensor, and the gas supply. On an electric heater, it is the breaker, the high-limit reset button, the elements and the thermostats. Having these parts on the truck is what lets many emergency calls end in one visit.

Smells, sounds and when to leave the house

  • Rotten egg smell near a gas heater: leave the house, do not use switches or phones inside, and call the gas utility from outside.
  • Loud popping or rumbling: usually sediment, not an emergency, but worth scheduling a flush.
  • Steam or very hot water from the relief valve: turn off the heat source. The thermostat or the valve may have failed, and this needs attention right away.
  • Scorched marks around the burner door: a venting or draft problem. Turn the heater off and keep the area ventilated until it is checked.

Can it wait until morning?

If you have shut off the water and nothing is leaking, a cold shower for a night is often cheaper than an after-hours call. If water keeps leaking because the shutoff valve does not close fully, or there is a gas smell, it cannot wait.

After the emergency

Once the heater is running again, ask the technician how old the unit is and what condition the tank looks to be in. If it is near the end of its life, planning a replacement now is cheaper than paying for a second emergency visit later.
